About Us

The Federal Housing Authority Lawn Tennis Club (FHALTC), Festac Town, Lagos was created as a wing of the Federal Housing Authority Sports Club (FHASC) which was a concept of Mr. S.P.O.F. Ebie, the then General Manager and CEO of Federal Housing Authority.

On the 9th of November 1979, FHASC was launched by Assistant Inspector General of Police, Tokunbo Alli. At the launch, Chief (Engr) O. Fadahunsi, the Chairman of The Board of Directors of FHA committed to donate a Trophy to the Lawn Tennis Wing for the Wing Member’s Annual Tournament. At the time of the Launch, the Tennis Courts were not ready. It became the responsibility of the Chairman of FHASC to establish the Lawn Tennis facility, which became ready in 1981. It is located on 22 Road, Festac Town, Lagos.

FHA Lawn Tennis Tennis Club hereinafter referred to simply as the Club was set up to cater for the recreational needs of FHA staff only. The Club remained largely so until the Management of FHA reasoned very wisely that it would be more beneficial to open up the membership of the Club to non-FHA staff who are resident in the Festac community and beyond.

This decision soon led to a steady influx of members and ideas, and before long what was once a small and modest recreation club transformed into a fast-growing medium sized Club, with membership strength currently in excess of 250 persons from all walks of life.

The Club has grown today into a triple nature of being a Sport Centre, a Recreational Arena and a Social Club. As a Sport Centre, it has very good facilities for playing Lawn Tennis, Draught (the game of the Masters), Table Tennis, Snooker, Billiard, Dart, Chess, Scramble, Monopoly and to crown it, – a Swimming Pool and a standard Gym. A solar power system capable to carry all the facilities and a 100KVA Gen Set are on Standby. As a Recreation Arena, we have facilities for all day and night relaxation. We play amongst ourselves daily and against members of other clubs in brotherly and friendly atmosphere. In this way, we literally keep hypertension and related health afflictions at bay, thus slogan: FHA Tennis can cure hypertension!

As a Social Club, we organise and attend social and developmental events. We travel far and wide to honour invitations of members. We are our brothers’ keepers.

The Club is open to every decent adult man and woman who can pass through our rigorous admission process. The Club is a non-governmental, non-political, non-religious and non-tribal. All you need to exhibit is decency, civility and love for one another. The Club is regulated by a constitution and tradition to which every member is expected to comply strictly; failure attracts severe sanctions.

The name of the Club simply connotes its origin. Practically now, the Club is a non-governmental organization. In 1988, the FHA Management dissolved all the wings of the Sport Club (Football, Boxing, Table Tennis and Swimming) but left the Executive Committee of the Lawn Tennis Club to run the Club at their expense. Therefore, from 1999, all the infrastructural provisions, capital projects and day-to-day running costs have been raised through the philanthropy of members and the grace of good friends of the Club.

Some sample of the Club Ethics are:
·        When a member enters the Club, he or she must first greet the President or in his absence, the Vice President, before he or she can proceed to shake hands with every member within the Club’s premises.
·        No telephone calls are allowed within the tennis court area.
·        When a member of the Executive Committee or an authorized member pronounces on the floor of the Club, the 3 attention drawing words: “Take A Let”, every member present is expected to become “stationary speechless and action-less”.

On governance and management, the Club has:

CONSULTATIVE COUNCIL: This body comprises:

·        Grand Patron
·        Patrons/Patronesses
·        Elders Council

The Duty of the Consultative Council is advisory and upon consultation.

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL: This body comprises:
·        President
·        Vice President
·        Captain
·        General Secretary
·        Financial Secretary
·        Social & Members Welfare Secretary
·        Treasurer
·        Maintenance Officer
·        Assistant Captain
·        Assistant General Secretary
·        Assistant Social & Members Welfare Secretary

The past Presidents and their teams have done very well in lifting the Club to the enviable height which it has attained with the invaluable support of all members. The strength lies in the wonderful spirit of each incumbent Exco serving to improve what their predecessors had laid down.

Therein, lies the strength and beauty of our ever growing lively club. You need to experience this, to understand it; Words are not enough.
